Antibacterial materials were used in all spaces of Medicana International Samsun Hospital constructed on an indoor area of 30 thousand square meters. Central air conditioning system is available in each room. Patients and relatives can easily adjust the temperature in their room using the control panel. Moreover, all Hospital Rooms have vanity units (built-in washbasins). Fresh air fed by bacteria filters are also planned for each room. Obesity and Metabolic Surgery

How are these surgeries performed?

These surgeries primarily intend transposition of small intestines. However, numerous techniques are used for this transposition procedure. The most common ones are gastric bypass, duodenal switch, ileal interposition and Transit Bipartition.

Laparoscopic surgery is preferred; in other words, 4 to 5 ports are opened on the anterior abdominal wall. Surgery lasts approximately 1 to 1.5 hours and patients are discharged following 3-day hospital stay.

What are the benefits gained by patients after surgery?

Blood glucose usually restores to normal ranges one week after the surgery. It may take 2 to 3 weeks in some patients.

Diabetes involves some organs, especially kidney, heart, eyes and liver. In patients who undergo Metabolic Surgery, organ involvement can be reduced up to 50%, although organ injury, stage of disease and grade of damage also play role.

IN VITRO FERTILIZATION

MEDICINE-FREE IVF

This method, which is used by our team in our country and is not widely used, is treatment approach particularly reserved for the patients, who have risk of hyperstimulation, have polycystic ovary syndrome and medication problems and who are under risk of cancer.

ONCOFERTILITY

Oncofertility principally aims protection of ovaries and uterus in patients, who receive anti-cancer treatment, and hazardous effects of medications are taken into consideration and no medication or any medication without any adverse effect is used for these patients. Another approach is to freeze ovarian tissues that are removed in conditions, which may influence ovaries, and to implant them into subcutaneous tissue in order to offer a chance of pregnancy.

PREGNANCY VACCINE AND PRP

Although these two methods are not evidence-based, these approaches may be preferred in appropriate patient groups. They have no role in routine treatments.

ADVANCED LEVEL GYNECOLOGICAL ULTRASOUND

ONCOLOGY CENTER

Oncology Center of Medicana International Samsun Hospital adopts a multidisciplinary approach, which is characterized with involvement of all disciplines, specialist physicians and advanced technological infrastructure, in the light of diagnosis and treatment of cancer. Presenting to the center, patients are evaluated with a holistic treatment plan and patient-specific procedures are discussed in the council.

At Oncology Center of Medicana International Samsun Hospital, services are delivered by Medical Oncology department, where targeted drugs and molecules are used; Radiation Oncology department, where option of 3 Dimensional Conformal Radiotherapy (IMRT) is offered; and Oncologic Surgery department, where both open and laparoscopic surgeries are performed for all solid organ tumors.

Patients also have the option of psychological support in our center along with most advanced anti-cancer treatments.

PET/CT

PET/CT device is used for all stages, ranging from initial diagnosis, staging, determining the spread and correct treatment planning in cancers. After the cancer is mapped on PET/CT scan, an effective fight against the disease is ensured.

It is a very important medical imaging method that allows diagnosis of many diseases by combining positron emission tomography (PET) and computerized tomography (CT).

PET/CT is most commonly used for cancer patients. However, it also helps determining the infectious focus in idiopathic fever, identifying the viable tissue in patients with heart disease and differential diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.

How is PET/CT scanned?

A minimum fasting period of 6 hours is required to scan PET/CT. First, blood glucose level is measured. If the blood glucose reading is within acceptable ranges, radioactive substance is injected into the vessel. Although various radioactive substances are used, the most common one is F-18 Fluorodeoxyglucose. This substance is a glucose molecule that is attached to a radioactive substance, called Fluorine-18. Following the injection, the patient rests for one hour to enable distribution of the substance in the body. Next, the patient is placed in PET/CT scanner.

Other substances used for PET/CT imaging are F-18 NaF to scan bones, Ga-68 PSMA to scan prostate cancers and Ga-68 Octerotide to scan neuroendocrine tumors. There are many radiopharmaceutical agents, which are not routinely used.

PET/CT significantly boosts success of fight against cancer in many stages ranging from detecting the cancerous tissue to treatment plan, evaluation of treatment response and radiotherapy plan.

How is PET/CT used for each stage of diagnosis and treatment in cancer?

The most remarkable difference between cancer cells and healthy cells is the quick and uncontrolled growth. Energy requirements of cells with higher activity are higher than usual. When certain substances used by cancerous cells, such as glucose, protein and some special metabolic substances, are labeled with a radioactive substance, location of cancerous tissues can be detected. PET/CT scanner works on this principle.

PET/CT guides the anti-cancer treatment and it is used at following stages of diagnosis and treatment:

It is useful to determine the metabolism of tissue that is suspicious for cancer.

PET/CT reveals out whether the mass lesions detected with various imaging modalities have metabolic characteristics of cancer. If the mass lesion is positive on PET/CT scan, it implies that the mass lesion consumes too much glucose and it is more likely a cancer.

Taking biopsy specimen at the correct location of the tissue with suspicious cancer

Cancerous tissue may damage itself due to uncontrolled growth. Adequate amount of cells may not be collected from the tissues located at the location of self-harm. PET/CT demonstrates the zones, where viable cells are at high concentration, and guides the biopsy.

Evaluating spread of cancer

PET/CT technology is successfully used in many types of cancers to evaluate the spread of disease (staging) at the first phase, after the cancer is diagnosed.

Determining treatment approach

Treatment approach is modified in one of every three patients on average after this scan. Medication treatment may be administered instead of a major surgery and an unnecessary surgery can be avoided. In some cases, PET/CT may rule out distant metastasis and lead to decision of removal of the cancer for patients rather than medication treatment.

Early determination of response to anti-cancer drug

Adverse effects of cancer medications must be taken seriously. Use of proper medication will not only prevent development of unnecessary adverse effect, but it will also offer the opportunity of preventing the disease with early intervention. PET/CT scanned following Cycle 1 or 2 of treatment provides useful information about the extent the medication will help the patient.

Determination of treatment response.

PET/CT enables digital evaluation of response to treatment regarding both structural changes and intensity of the cellular activity. Efficiency of treatment is determined by investigating cancer cells after the treatment is completed. PET/CT is the imaging modality that demonstrates the response to the treatment in the earliest phase.

Radiation therapy plan

Since PET/CT maps viable cancerous cells that will be irradiated, radiotherapy will be more precise and efficient and side effects are minimized by avoiding exposure of health tissues to unnecessary radiation.

Early detection of recurrent disease

After treatment cycles are completed, patients are followed up in the light of imaging studies, such as ultrasound and tomography, and blood tests. If these modalities point to a suspicion, PET/CT scan can determine whether viable cancerous cells emerged again and the extent they spread.

Last-generation radiotherapy technology; Radiation Oncology

IMRT 3 Dimensional Conformal Radiotherapy system, the ground breaking last-generation radiotherapy technology, is used at Radiation Oncology Department of Medicana International Samsun Hospital for treatment of cancers. Patient-specific cancer surgery

Patients with lung, breast, gastrointestinal, gynecological and all other cancers are preoperatively evaluated in the oncology council along with experienced surgical team.
